Don joined the DMIC mentoring team in 2018. He is an experienced classroom teacher with 29 years working in schools in Auckland, Whangarei and London. Don has been a team leader, co-ordinated school-wide professional developments and provided leadership in various curriculum areas. He first saw the potential of DMIC in 2013 and began working with DMIC in his classroom in 2014.
Don’s areas of expertise in his role as mathematics mentor include:
● Providing professional leadership in developing mathematical inquiry communities across and within schools
● Providing mentoring to individual teachers in classrooms to support their growth of pedagogical practices including culturally responsive teaching, inquiry mathematics teaching and teaching as inquiry
● Leading professional development workshops with teachers and school leaders
● Providing support in writing culturally relevant mathematical tasks that focus on mathematical big ideas
